At the 4th Istanbul Children and Youth Art Biennial, held from 19 April to 23 May, artist Genco Gülan will run a workshop titled “Smart Paintings” with autistic children at Antrepo 1. Starting from the fact that there is no single kind of intelligence, the workshop aims to bring out the creative intelligence of autistic children and to reach a multi-layered level of intelligence.
As part of the Istanbul Children and Youth Art Biennial, organised for the fourth time this year by Palet Culture, Art and Education Association (PALETDER) under the concept “Wake-up Call: Good Morning”, artist Genco Gülan, known for his original interdisciplinary work, will run a special workshop to help autistic children reveal their creative powers and unique intelligence.
Genco Gülan’s workshop, titled “Smart Paintings”, will take place on 30 April at Antrepo 1. Noting that there is not just one intelligence but many different kinds of intelligence in the world, Gülan says that some of the most creative examples of intelligence can be seen in the creative output of autistic children. During the workshop, the artist will work with autistic children to help them produce a series of paintings. These images will then be reprocessed with an artificial intelligence (AI) generator and the results added on top of the original paintings. When the process is complete, each of the 10 resulting paintings will be a combination of several different intelligences or layers of intelligence. Gülan says the aim of the workshop is to reach a multi-layered level of intelligence.

Creating the right climate for raising creative new generations,
The Istanbul Children and Youth Art Biennial, organised for the fourth time this year by Palet Culture, Art and Education Association (PALETDER), is held in institutional partnership with the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education and Türkiye Eğitim Gönüllüleri Vakfı (TEGV), with the support of the Beyoğlu and Beşiktaş municipalities.
The Istanbul Children and Youth Art Biennial creates a space for sharing grounded in multiculturalism on a global scale, enabling different geographies and cultures to be expressed through the eyes and aesthetics of children. Children and young people, who can create work in many fields at the Biennial, from performance to dance and from video art to sculpture, also lead the way in building effective intercultural communication.
Enriched by the exhibitions, concerts, events and workshops of students on their way to becoming the producers and audiences of arts and culture of the future, the Istanbul Children and Youth Art Biennial is followed by a wide audience of writers, artists, art lovers, teachers, students, parents and members of the press. Previous Biennials, held at a variety of venues across Istanbul including its ferries, squares, railway stations, warehouses, galleries and museums, have been visited by 160,000 people.
